All Along The Watchtower. First Solo Guitar Lesson.

Jack Ruch explains the intro guitar solo to Jimi Hendrix’s version of All Along The Watchtower. Video and Tabs. This lesson is medium difficulty.

Gear:

The video was recorded in a tiny house in Kitasenzoku, Tokyo using an old Sony dcr-vx1000, a 14-inch iBook, custom-shop Strat strung with 11-49s, a Burriss Boostier, and a red Roland CUBE Street.

Tuning:

This lesson uses E flat standard tuning. 1st string- E flat, 2nd string- B flat, 3rd string- G flat, 4th string- D flat, 5th string- A flat, 6th string- E flat.

Tabs:

Opening Chords:

The chords on Hendrix’s version of Watchtower are a C min, Bflat major, and Aflat major. The guitar is tuned down to E flat standard.
If you want to play it in standard tuning, the chords will be C# B and A.
In the video I play the C min with the thumb wrapped around the neck and grabbing the 8th fret of the low E string. The ring finger grabs the 10th fret of the D string and the index finger bars the 8th fret of the G B and E strings. The A string should be muted and not heard. The next chord uses the same voicing down two frets, just make it major by adding in the major third with your middle finger on the 7th fret of the G string. The last chord is this same voicing down another two frets.

Hey man, fantastic lessons. Wish you could be available available on the east coast, but since you’re located out there, i was wondering if you knew any quality teachers near eastern PA / Jersey. I have plateaued, teaching myself as much as i can learn right now without someone who really knows their stuff.

    Hi jack

Just a very sincere thank you for your educational videos which have helped me tremendously to master a wee bit of Jimi Hendrix & Joe Bonamassa. To nail a solo precisely gives you a very special feeling and although I would never copy it note for note other than for personal satisfaction it is a great way to really get to know your away around the fretboard. Once again thank you Jack, believe me all your time and hard work is very much appreciated.

    please?

  17. You are a great teacher because you explain things so clearly and with the bs some of the other online teachers do. Is there anyway in the future to tab the solo’s out in standard tuning. I am sure you have had many requests to do this. Thanks again for all you do to help us understand, Jerry P
